To be completely honest, Home Made Energy took me by surprise and delivered quite a good solar power guide. When comparing it to the competition, the Home Made Energy guide may lack some of the fancy graphics but it definitely does not lack any of the information.

I guess this can be expected from an electrician like Ben Ford. Typically electricians like Ben are not too concerned with pretty pictures but rather do what it takes to get the job done right. Ben pretty much drags you through the trenches with him as he shows you exactly how he builds his solar panels with his over 20 years of electrical experience.

Right off the bat, I’d say that one thing the Home Made Energy guide does not lack is detail. They have done a great job in making sure that no stone remained unturned in the process.

The written guide itself contains a lot of great information, from the different options you have for setting up your solar power system to easy step-by-step directions to building your own solar panels. It also includes a nice message about change by reducing your dependence on oil which on a large scale is definitely a big step in the right direction.

But what makes this solar energy guide special is the videos that come along with it. Ben Ford has practically taken the entire manual and created a video series for it that goes into much more detail than the manual itself.

The Home Made Energy videos teach you everything from exactly how to size your solar power system to a step-by-step video where you watch Ben make a solar panel in his own garage. Just to give you an idea of the detail that Ben gets into, he has an entire hour long video presentation on batteries alone!

The videos are actually somewhat amusing because you get to see Ben make a few mistakes here and there. Funny or not, you can learn a lot from these mistakes so you can make sure not to make them yourself. This can definitely save you some time and money in case you start thinking about cutting corners.

And I’d like to note that Ben does show you a couple of different materials that you can use to make your panels. I highly recommend using the plastic backing that Ben uses in his videos because it will help you get much more mileage out of your panel. This will save you time and money in the long run.

The guide also gives you 13 steps to building your own wind turbine which can make a great addition to your home solar power system. At the moment there are not any video instructions for the wind turbine but it would not surprise me if he added them at a later time. But at this point, I have not heard of any plans of him doing this.

If you are more technically oriented then the Home Made Energy guide might be a better guide for you. Being an electrician, Ben is definitely much more technically oriented with his presentation which can be a huge benefit those who share the same mindset. And it is this technical detail that gives his solar power guide an edge over the competition.

There is a lot you can learn from a seasoned veteran like Ben Ford which is why I highly recommend his Home Made Energy guide. If you are looking for a highly detailed plan on how to build your own solar panels and set up your own home solar power system to save yourself some good money then Home Made Energy is one of the best there is.
