home wind turbines Home Wind Turbines (and how to save 80% on the cost)Years ago, wind power was limited in use to either large scale operations in open fields or for those with enough land that they could keep their wind turbine away from their own home as well as their neighbors. But in recent years, home wind turbines have evolved due to technological advancements to make them a great option even for large community residential areas.

In the past, Home wind turbines use to produce a loud and quite annoying humming noise due to the excessive vibration of the spinning wind turbine blades. Because of this, those who wanted to harness wind power had to place their turbine far enough away from their home that they were not bothered by the noise. But with newer technology this noise problem has been solved which has lead to the development of residential wind turbines that can be used even in more crowded and urban areas.

If you are interested in home wind turbines as a way of supplementing power to your home there are some great options depending on how much power you want to generate and how much money you are willing to invest.

Commercial Wind Turbines

Commercial wind turbines are easily the most expensive option there is but also the easiest. These types of home wind turbines can range anywhere between $6,000 and $22,000 depending on the size of your application. The good news is that there is no work to do with these commercial versions. The company you purchase it from typically takes care of the installation for you.

But at this point in time, the price of these commercial wind turbines makes them a questionable investment because it can takes over 20 years just to break even on your initial investment before you can even begin to actually save money.

Home Wind Turbine Kits

Another much more viable option is to use a home wind turbine kit. These types of kits are considered more of the middle road when it comes to the cost and work involved. Typically, these kits range in price anywhere from $600 to $4,000 depending on the size.

While still a little pricey, these kits allow you to do some of the work yourself while saving a good amount of money in the process. The kits themselves come with just about everything you need to construct and install your wind turbine including the blades, hub, wind generator, charge controller, and cabling. The only thing you have to furnish yourself is the mount and inverter.

While these home wind turbine kits are a much better solution than the commercial ones, they are still fairly costly for the average consumer.

Homemade Wind Turbines

There is one other option that involves a little extra do it yourself work but you cannot beat the price. You can build your own wind turbine from scratch which will cost you roughly $100 to $200 which is a savings of around 80%. Almost the entire cost is spent on the wind generator itself.

There are some great and inexpensive DIY wind turbine guides that show you step by step how to build a wind turbine almost entirely out of common materials that you can get from your local hardware store. Typically there are two types of models, wood and plastic. Most guides show you the typical wooden wind turbine model but there are some of the best guides that show you how to build your turbine almost entirely out of PVC which will typically last much longer than the wood.

No matter which one of these home wind turbines you decide to go with, you will still be doing your part to help keep the environment clean which is very noble cause. But if you are looking to save 80% on the cost then you can easily do it with just a little elbow grease.
